Lesson 12.1.15 · Capital Mundial del Vallenato

🪗 Valledupar

Capital of Cesar, on the Guatapurí River at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. About 500,000 people. The undisputed world capital of vallenato music — every April, the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata crowns the world's best accordionist.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

169 m above sea level, hot and dry (28–34 °C). Locals are valduparenses or vallenatos. The accordion is the city's unofficial coat of arms.

02

History

Founded in 1550 by Hernando de Santana on land of the Chimila and Tupe peoples. For centuries it was a sleepy ranching town. The Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata, founded in 1968 by Consuelo Araújo and Rafael Escalona, made it world-famous.

03

Geography & Climate

la plaza[lah PLAH-sah]

el museo[el moo-SEH-oh]

05

Food

el queso costeño[el KEH-soh kos-TEH-nyo]

la chicha[lah CHEE-cha]

A vallenato has four traditional rhythms: paseo, merengue, son, and puya. Songs are stories — about love, the river, the cattle, the Sierra. To be from Valledupar is to know the lyrics.

la canción[lah kan-SYON]

la letra[lah LEH-trah]

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
