History
Cali founded 1536 by Belalcázar — one of the oldest in the Americas. Sugar cane and Afro-Colombian labor shaped the valley. 1970s salsa boom (Grupo Niche, Guayacán) made Cali the world capital of salsa. 1971 Pan-American Games modernized the city.

Pacific coast at Buenaventura (Colombia's main port), then Cordillera Occidental cloud forest, then the wide hot Cauca valley (24–32 °C). Farallones de Cali tower over Cali to the west.
