Lesson 12.1.10 · El Sur de Bogotá

🏘️ Soacha

Officially a separate municipality in Cundinamarca, in practice Bogotá's southern overflow. About 650,000 people on paper, easily a million in reality. Reached by TransMilenio. Young, working-class, and growing fast.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

Sits at 2,565 m, just south of Bogotá. Locals are soachunos. The TransMilenio NQS line ends here, making Soacha the only major Colombian city formally linked to the capital's bus rapid transit.

el soachuno[el so-ah-CHOO-no]

person from Soacha

el sur[el SOOR]

the south

el bus[el BOOS]

bus

02

History

The name comes from Muisca: Suacha = 'land of the sun.' Pre-conquest, it was a sacred Muisca site. After independence, it stayed a small farm town until Bogotá's 20th-century explosion swallowed it whole.

el muisca[el MWEES-kah]

Muisca (indigenous group)

el sol[el SOL]

the sun

sagrado[sah-GRAH-doh]

sacred

03

Geography & Climate

High Andean savanna, cool and often misty (8–18 °C). The Bogotá River runs through, polluted but present. The Salto del Tequendaño — the famous waterfall — is on the city's edge.

el salto[el SAL-toh]

waterfall

la sabana[lah sah-BAH-nah]

savanna / plateau

el frío[el FREE-oh]

04

Sights

Salto del Tequendaño (re-opened as a hotel-museum), the Parque Arqueológico Piedras del Tunjo with Muisca rock paintings, and the colonial Iglesia de San Bernardino (1604).

la piedra[lah PYEH-drah]

stone / rock

la pintura[lah peen-TOO-rah]

antiguo[an-TEE-gwo]

05

Food

Same Bogotá table — ajiaco, tamal santafereño, almojábanas — plus aggressive street food: arepas de chócolo, obleas, mazorcas, and the inescapable empanada de papa.

la oblea[lah oh-BLEH-ah]

thin wafer with arequipe

la empanada[lah em-pah-NAH-dah]

empanada (turnover)

el ajiaco[el ah-HYAH-koh]

Bogotá-style chicken-potato soup

06

Identity

Soacha is the Bogotá metro's beating, working heart — long commutes, cheap rents, big dreams. The city's hip-hop, breakdance, and graffiti scenes punch far above its weight.

el grafiti[el grah-FEE-tee]

graffiti

el hip-hop[el HEEP-hop]

hip-hop

el barrio[el BAH-rryo]

neighborhood

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
