History

Guane people pre-1540. Spanish founded San Gil 1689, Bucaramanga 1622. The Comuneros revolt (1781) in Socorro lit an early independence fuse. Department named for Francisco de Paula Santander, hombre de las leyes.

Geography

From hot Magdalena Medio (Barrancabermeja) up to páramo at El Almorzadero. The Cañón del Chicamocha drops 2,000 m. Bucaramanga sits at 950 m, mild 19–28 °C.
