The Basics

1,411 m above sea level, average 21 °C. Locals are pereiranos. The unofficial nicknames — querendona (loving), trasnochadora (night-owl), morena (brown-skinned) — are sung in the city anthem.

History

Founded in 1863 by Francisco Pereira Martínez and Guillermo Pereira Gamba on the ruins of old Cartago. It boomed in the 20th century when coffee became Colombia's main export.

Geography & Climate

Sits on a coffee-growing plateau between the Cordillera Central and Occidental. The Otún River runs through. Nearby: the Nevado de Santa Isabel and Los Nevados National Park.

Identity

Pereiranos call their city the social heart of the Eje Cafetero. The accent is Paisa-light, the nightlife is famous nationwide, and the warmth toward visitors is real.
