Just east of Cali, in the Valle del Cauca, about 350,000 people. Sugar-cane country. Home of the National University's main agronomy campus and the Cali international airport (which is technically in Palmira).

History
Founded as a parish in 1773. The 19th-century sugar industry made it the agricultural engine of the Valle. The National University's Palmira campus, founded 1934, trains agronomists from across the Andean region.

Geography & Climate
Flat valley floor between the Cordillera Central (east) and Occidental (west). The Cauca River runs to the west. The CIAT international agricultural research center is on the city's outskirts.
