Lesson 13.1.21 · Departamento de Nariño

🌋 Department of Nariño

Nariño climbs from the Pacific mangroves of Tumaco up to the Andean páramos and the snowcapped Galeras volcano above Pasto. A bridge between Colombia and the Quechua-influenced Andes of Ecuador.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

Capital: Pasto. 64 municipalities. ~1.6 million people. On the Ecuadorian border via Ipiales / Rumichaca.

el nariñense[el nah-ree-NYEN-seh]

person from Nariño

la frontera[lah fron-TEH-rah]

border

el páramo[el PAH-rah-mo]

high moorland

02

History

Pastos and Quillacingas were the pre-Columbian peoples. Pasto founded 1539 by Belalcázar. Famously royalist during independence. Patron saint of cordilleran resistance — and birthplace of Colombia's most beloved Holy Week traditions in the south.

el pasto[el PAS-toh]

Pasto people / city

el realista[el reh-ah-LEES-tah]

royalist

la independencia[lah een-deh-pen-DEN-syah]

independence

03

Geography

Pacific lowlands (Tumaco, Barbacoas), Andean knot of Los Pastos, two cordilleras embracing high valleys, and Volcán Galeras (active) over Pasto. Cool nights even in the cities (10–18 °C).

la cordillera[lah kor-dee-YEH-rah]

mountain range

el manglar[el man-GLAR]

mangrove

el volcán[el bol-KAN]

volcano

04

What to See

Las Lajas Sanctuary (gothic basilica in a canyon at Ipiales), Laguna de la Cocha and Isla de la Corota, Volcán Galeras viewpoints, Carnaval de Negros y Blancos in Pasto (UNESCO), and Tumaco's Pacific beaches.

el santuario[el san-TWAH-ryo]

sanctuary

la laguna[lah lah-GOO-nah]

lagoon

el carnaval[el kar-nah-BAL]

carnival

05

Food

Cuy asado (roast guinea pig), hornado pastuso, lapingachos (potato-cheese cakes), juice of mortiño, helado de paila (paddle ice cream), and quimbolitos.

el cuy[el KWEE]

guinea pig (food)

el hornado[el or-NAH-doh]

roast pork

el helado de paila[el eh-LAH-doh deh PAI-lah]

paddle-frozen ice cream

06

Identity

Pastusos speak careful Andean Spanish with Quechua loanwords (achachay = how cold!). Famously the butt of pastuso jokes — a kind of national in-joke. Carnaval (Jan 4–6) flips the script: blackface day, then white-face day, then the giant float parade.

achachay[ah-chah-CHAI]

brrr / how cold

el chiste pastuso[el CHEES-teh pas-TOO-soh]

Pasto-style joke

guagua[GWAH-gwah]

kid (Quechua)

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
