History
Founded in 1777 by Antonio de la Torre y Miranda along the Sinú. Cattle ranching shaped its economy from the start. In the 20th century, Sinú floods and political violence repeatedly remade the city.

Geography & Climate
Flat alluvial plain along the lower Sinú River. Hot, humid, with a rainy season May–November. Crocodiles still swim downstream.

Sights
Ronda del Sinú park, the Catedral de San Jerónimo, the Plaza de Bolívar, and the planchones (small wooden ferries) that still cross the river. The Festival del Porro is held nearby in San Pelayo.

Identity
The sombrero vueltiao, Colombia's national hat, is woven by Zenú indigenous artisans nearby. Porro and fandango brass bands rule the festivals. Cattle, river, and rhythm — that is Montería.
