Lesson 13.1.20 · Departamento del Meta

🌈 Department of Meta

Meta is the gateway to the Llanos — joropo, cattle, and the river of seven colors at Caño Cristales. Just three hours east of Bogotá but a different country culturally.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

Capital: Villavicencio. 29 municipalities. ~1.1 million people. Largely flat savanna with the Macarena range as a striking exception.

el llano[el YAH-no]

the plains

la sabana[lah sah-BAH-nah]

savanna

el río[el REE-oh]

river

02

History

Achagua, Sáliba, and Guayupe peoples lived along the rivers. Jesuit haciendas (1660s) introduced cattle. Villavicencio founded 1840, exploded after the Bogotá–Villavo highway opened in 1936. Heavy oil and palm-oil economies today.

la hacienda[lah ah-SYEN-dah]

ranch / estate

el petróleo[el peh-TROH-leh-oh]

petroleum

la palma de aceite[lah PAL-mah deh ah-SEH-ee-teh]

oil palm

03

Geography

Andean foothills around Villavicencio quickly flatten into endless savanna. Sierra de la Macarena rises like an island. Hot 26–34 °C, with marked wet/dry seasons. Major rivers: Meta, Guayabero, Ariari, Guatiquía.

la serranía[lah seh-rrah-NEE-ah]

small mountain range

la confluencia[lah kon-FLWEN-syah]

confluence

el horizonte[el oh-ree-SON-teh]

04

What to See

Caño Cristales (the river of five colors, June–Nov), Sierra de la Macarena, Villavicencio's Parque Las Malocas, Hato La Aurora-style hatos, Cubarral hot springs, and Mesetas in the post-conflict heart.

el caño[el KAH-nyo]

creek / channel

el cristal[el krees-TAL]

crystal

el hato[el AH-toh]

ranch

05

Food

Mamona (spit-roasted veal), pisillo de res, hayacas, palo a pique, cachama, and casabe. Wash down with refajo (beer + Colombiana). Restaurants along the highway out of Villavo are legendary.

el palo a pique[el PAH-lo ah PEE-keh]

el refajo[el reh-FAH-ho]

06

Llanero Identity

Joropo is law: harp, cuatro, maracas, and the relentless taconeo. Coplas are improvised. The Festival Internacional Joropódromo in Villavicencio gathers thousands of dancing pairs in matching white-and-red.

el joropódromo[el ho-ro-POH-dro-mo]

joropo dance procession

el zapateo[el sah-pah-TEH-oh]

stomping footwork

el cantador[el kan-tah-DOR]

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
