Lesson 13.1.19 · Departamento del Magdalena

🏔️ Department of Magdalena

Magdalena packs the snowcaps of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Caribbean beaches, the Ciénaga Grande wetland, and the literary heart of Macondo into one improbable department.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

Capital: Santa Marta — the oldest surviving Spanish city in South America (1525). 30 municipalities. ~1.4 million people. Bordered by La Guajira, Cesar, Bolívar, Atlántico, and the Caribbean.

02

History

Santa Marta founded 1525 by Bastidas. Bolívar died in 1830 at Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. Aracataca, García Márquez's birthplace, became the model for Macondo. Banana enclaves shaped the 20th century — including the 1928 Masacre de las Bananeras.

el flamenco[el flah-MEN-koh]

el mamo[el MAH-mo]

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
