Lesson 13.1.18 · Departamento de La Guajira

🏜️ Department of La Guajira

La Guajira is desert at the top of South America — Wayuu territory, salt flats, dunes meeting the Caribbean, and Cabo de la Vela where the wind never stops.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

Capital: Riohacha. 15 municipalities. ~1 million people, of whom roughly 45% are Wayuu — the largest indigenous group in Colombia.

02

History

Wayuu have lived in the peninsula for centuries, never conquered by Spain. Riohacha founded 1535. Pearl fishing, smuggling, and salt drove the economy. Cerrejón (since 1985) is one of the world's largest open-pit coal mines.

03

Geography

Northern peninsula is true desert (rainfall under 300 mm), with red dunes at Taroa. South ascends to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Hot (28–36 °C), dry, and windy — perfect for kitesurfing.

04

What to See

05

Food

Friche (goat-blood-and-organ stew), arroz con chivo, carne salada, langosta a la guajira, bollo de yuca, and chicha de maíz. Kosher coffee from the Sierra. Wayuu cooking centers on chivo (goat) and millo (sorghum).

Identity

Wayuu society is matrilineal, ruled by clans (e´irukus). The mochila wayuu bag is hand-woven over weeks. Wayuunaiki is widely spoken. Outside the desert, the costeño Caribbean spirit reigns.

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
