Lesson 12.1.33 · Monumento Nacional de Colombia

🏛️ Girón

Santander, just west of Bucaramanga. About 200,000 people. A whitewashed colonial town declared a National Monument — and a fast-growing suburb of Greater Bucaramanga.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

777 m above sea level, warm (22–30 °C). Locals are gironenses. The historic center is cobblestone, white, and almost frozen in the 17th century.

el gironés[el hee-roh-NES]

person from Girón

el monumento[el moh-noo-MEN-toh]

monument

el adoquín[el ah-doh-KEEN]

02

History

Founded in 1631 by Francisco Mantilla de los Ríos. Once the capital of the province, it lost prominence when Bucaramanga overtook it in the 19th century — which is why the colonial layout survived intact.

province

antiguo[an-TEE-gwo]

intacto[een-TAK-toh]

03

Geography & Climate

On the banks of the Río de Oro at the bottom of the Bucaramanga plateau. Warmer than Bucaramanga; rainy springs, dry summers.

gold

la orilla[lah oh-REE-yah]

riverbank

caliente[kah-LYEN-teh]

04

Sights

Basílica Menor San Juan Bautista, Mansión del Fraile, the Parque Principal, and the Puente Histórico. A walking-tour town par excellence.

la mansión[lah man-SYON]

05

Food

Cabro al horno (oven-roast goat), pepitoria, mute, and sun-dried beef. Many of greater Bucaramanga's best traditional restaurants live in Girón's old town.

el cabro[el KAH-bro]

goat

el horno[el OR-no]

oven

la pepitoria[lah peh-pee-TOH-ryah]

06

Identity

Gironenses balance colonial-town pride with metro-area growth. The whitewashed houses are a regulated heritage; the new neighborhoods spread aggressively into the hills.

el patrimonio[el pah-tree-MO-nyo]

heritage

el barrio[el BAH-rryo]

neighborhood

tradicional[trah-dee-syo-NAHL]

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
