History
Zenú people built sophisticated canal systems 2,000 years ago to manage flooding. Spanish founded Montería 1777. Department split from Bolívar in 1951. Cattle, banana enclaves, and recent palm-oil booms shaped land politics.

Mostly flat Sinú river plain, hot (28–34 °C), with the Nudo de Paramillo highlands in the south and 124 km of Caribbean coast in the north (San Bernardo del Viento, Moñitos, San Antero).

Mote de queso, sancocho de pescado, mojarra frita, arroz con coco, queso costeño, bollo limpio, butifarra, and dulce de ñame. Sinú beef is famous.

Identity
Cordobeses are costeños — fast Spanish, s-dropping, hospitable, fiesta-loving. Porro and fandango with brass bands fill town squares. The sombrero vueltiao is the national symbol, born here.
