Cesar is the cradle of vallenato — accordion, caja, and guacharaca telling stories of love and cattle on the Caribbean plains beneath the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

History

Wiwa, Kogi, Arhuaco, and Yukpa peoples have lived here for millennia. Spanish founded Valledupar in 1550. Department created in 1967, split off from Magdalena. Cotton boom and later coal at Cerrejón/Drummond shaped the economy.

Geography

Hot dry plains (28–36 °C), Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the north, Serranía del Perijá to the east. Cesar river runs through; the Ciénaga de Zapatosa is one of the country's largest wetlands.

Chivo guisado (stewed goat), friche, sancocho de gallina criolla, arroz de fideo, queso de capa, suero costeño, and bocadillo de guayaba. The dry savanna beef is famous.
