Cauca is mountains, volcanoes, sugar-cane valley edges, indigenous resguardos, Afro-Pacific coast, and Popayán — Colombia's white colonial gem. One of the most ethnically diverse departments.

The Basics

Capital: Popayán. 42 municipalities. ~1.5 million people. Stretches from the Pacific Ocean over the Cordillera Occidental and Central into the Cauca River valley.

History

Popayán founded 1537 by Belalcázar. Colonial wealth from gold mines and sugar haciendas. Birthplace of presidents (Mosquera, Caldas was educated here). Strong Nasa and Misak indigenous resistance and governance.

Geography

From sea-level Guapi on the Pacific to the 5,364 m Nevado del Huila. Volcán Puracé, the Macizo Colombiano (where Magdalena, Cauca, Caquetá, and Patía rivers all begin), and rich Cauca-river plains.

Popayán's white colonial center and Semana Santa, Tierradentro hypogea, Silvia (Misak market), San Agustín border archaeology, Volcán Puracé, the Tatacoa-style desert of Patía, and Guapi on the Pacific.

Identity

Payaneses are formal, intellectual, devout (Semana Santa is UNESCO heritage). Highland Nasa and Misak speak Nasa Yuwe and Namtrik. Pacific coast is Afro-Colombian — currulao, marimba, alabaos.
