Lesson 12.1.32 · Capital Petrolera de Colombia

🛢️ Barrancabermeja

Santander, on the Magdalena River. About 200,000 people. Home to Ecopetrol's largest refinery and the country's center of oil-worker labor history.

Sub-lessons

Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.

01

The Basics

75 m above sea level, hot (26–34 °C). Locals are barranqueños or barramejunos. The refinery is the city's silhouette and economy.

el barramejo[el bah-rrah-MEH-ho]

person from Barranca

la refinería[lah reh-fee-neh-REE-ah]

refinery

el petróleo[el peh-TROH-leh-oh]

petroleum

02

History

Oil was struck in 1918 at La Cira-Infantas; the city grew up around the wells. The 1948 oil-worker strike helped birth Colombia's modern labor movement.

el pozo[el PO-soh]

well

la huelga[lah WEL-gah]

strike

el sindicato[el seen-dee-KAH-toh]

labor union

03

Geography & Climate

On the right bank of the Magdalena River, in the Magdalena Medio region. Hot, humid, with afternoon storms in the rainy season.

la orilla[lah oh-REE-yah]

riverbank

la tormenta[lah tor-MEN-tah]

storm

el río[el REE-oh]

river

04

Sights

Malecón del Río Magdalena, the Ecopetrol refinery viewpoint, the Parque Infantil, and the Ciénaga San Silvestre wetlands just outside town.

el malecón[el mah-leh-KON]

riverwalk

la ciénaga[lah SYEH-nah-gah]

wetland / marsh

el humedal[el oo-meh-DAHL]

05

Food

Pescado del río Magdalena (bocachico, bagre), viuda de pescado, arepa santandereana, and the always-present sancocho. The riverbank fish stalls are unmissable.

el bagre[el BAH-greh]

catfish

la viuda[lah BYOO-dah]

fish steamed in leaves

el sancocho[el san-KO-cho]

06

Identity

Barramejos are tough, river-shaped, and politically loud. Oil money built the city; oil-worker organizing gave it a national voice. The Magdalena River is family.

el obrero[el o-BREH-roh]

worker

fuerte[FWER-teh]

strong

el río[el REE-oh]

river

MEM

Memory lab

Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.

Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
