Lesson 13.1.4 · Departamento del Atlántico
🌊 Department of Atlántico
Atlántico is small, flat, hot, and loud — Colombia's Caribbean front porch. Anchored by Barranquilla, it's where the Magdalena River finally meets the sea and where the country throws its biggest party.
Sub-lessons
Break this lesson into focused chunks. Each sub-lesson has its own Memory Lab — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaved review, and shadowing — scoped to just those words.
The Basics
Capital: Barranquilla. 23 municipalities. About 2.7 million people, second-densest department after Quindío. Bordered by Bolívar, Magdalena, the Magdalena River, and the Caribbean.

History
Bocas de Ceniza, where the Magdalena hits the sea, made Barranquilla Colombia's main 19th-century port — first airline (SCADTA, 1919), first radio station, first soccer club. Atlántico was carved from Bolívar in 1910.

Costeño Identity
Costeños drop their s's (¿qué má?), use eñe/llave/socio for friend, and live outdoors. Carnaval (UNESCO heritage) is the soul: cumbia, mapalé, garabato, marimonda. Voseo no, but tú everywhere.

Memory lab
Five research-backed techniques — active recall, mnemonics, elaboration, interleaving, and production — applied to this lesson's vocabulary. Your progress trains a spaced-repetition schedule under the hood.
Force the answer from memory before peeking. The struggle is the workout — that's the testing effect.
